Automating a poorly insulated building's HVAC optimises around a problem that could be reduced at the source. Here's why envelope matters first.
What building envelope actually means
A building's envelope — its insulation, glazing, shading and how well-sealed it is — determines how much heat enters or escapes before any HVAC system even switches on. A poorly insulated building with excessive unshaded glass forces its HVAC to work far harder than a well-designed envelope would ever require.
Why automating around a poor envelope has limits
Smart, occupancy-based HVAC control genuinely reduces waste, but it's optimising the operation of a system working against a structural disadvantage — a building leaking heat through poor insulation or unshaded west-facing glass will always need more cooling energy than one that doesn't, however smart its controls are.
Where this fits in an energy optimisation plan
For new construction, envelope decisions (insulation, glazing, shading) are worth prioritising alongside automation planning, not treated as a separate concern from a different phase of the project. For an existing building where envelope changes are impractical or expensive, automation still delivers real value — it's just worth being realistic that it's optimising within a constraint, not eliminating it.
