Why homes end up mixing ecosystems

Rarely by design — usually because a device was bought for one reason (a Samsung TV comes with SmartThings, an Echo speaker comes with Alexa) and over time a household ends up with devices spread across two or three platforms, each with its own app and its own voice assistant that doesn't control the others.

How bridging actually works

Some platforms offer native integrations with each other (SmartThings can connect to Google Home, for instance), and where that's not available, a bridging hub or automation platform (often Home Assistant) can sit underneath all of them, pulling devices from each ecosystem into one unified set of scenes and rules — so 'Good Night' can turn off a Google-linked light and a SmartThings-linked plug with one command, regardless of which app each device technically lives in.

What to expect realistically

Bridging isn't always perfectly seamless — some advanced features specific to one ecosystem (a particular sensor's fine-grained settings, for example) may only be accessible in that platform's own app even after bridging. The goal of an integration project is unified day-to-day control and automation, not eliminating every vendor app entirely, and it's worth setting that expectation up front.
