Bluetooth Mesh vs BLE: What's the Difference for Large Deployments
Standard Bluetooth (BLE) connects device to device. Bluetooth Mesh extends that into a network covering a much larger area. Here's how they differ.
Standard BLE: point-to-point, limited range
Standard Bluetooth Low Energy typically connects one device directly to another (a wearable to a phone, a beacon to a receiver) with limited range — fine for a single pairing, but not designed to cover a large building or extend beyond a fairly short direct distance.
Bluetooth Mesh: extending coverage across many devices
Bluetooth Mesh allows BLE devices to relay messages to each other, extending effective range across a much larger area — a large commercial building, a warehouse, a multi-floor facility — similar in concept to how Zigbee or Z-Wave mesh networks work, but built on the widely available Bluetooth radio hardware already in most modern devices.
Where Bluetooth Mesh is actually being deployed
It's increasingly used for large-scale commercial lighting control and asset-tracking deployments, where the goal is many small, low-power devices covering a wide area without the cost of installing a completely separate wireless infrastructure. This is worth knowing about specifically for large commercial lighting projects considering their control network options.
