Alert Fatigue: Why More Notifications Isn't Better Monitoring

A system that sends fifty alerts a day trains people to ignore all of them, including the one that mattered. Here's how good alert design actually works.

How alert fatigue actually happens

Every sensor and system defaults to sending an alert for every event it detects, which sounds thorough but in practice buries the genuinely important alert under routine noise — a door sensor firing every time it's opened normally, a minor temperature fluctuation that self-corrects. Within weeks, the person receiving these stops reading them closely, which defeats the entire purpose of alerting in the first place.

What good alert design actually does

Alerts need priority tiers — a genuinely urgent event (fire, intrusion, equipment failure) should look and feel different from a routine informational note, not arrive in the same undifferentiated notification stream. Thresholds should be tuned to the specific site rather than left at generic factory defaults, and repeated, resolved-on-its-own events should be summarised rather than sent individually.

Escalation matters as much as the alert itself

An urgent alert that isn't acknowledged within a set time should escalate — to a second person, a different channel, or a phone call — rather than sitting unread in an app nobody's currently looking at. This single design decision is often what separates a monitoring system that actually catches problems from one that technically 'has alerts' but doesn't reliably act on them.
